Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’ is a first-rate garden plant that deserves a place at center stage in the border. With blue flowers in May and June, golden yellow fall color, and shiny, willow-shaped leaves all season long, it has no down time. ‘Blue Ice,’ previously known as WFF Selection, was spotted by our staff while walking through a greenhouse full of A. tabernaemontana. It makes an exceptional edging plant, too.

You’ll find this graceful wildflower remarkably accommodating. Though its natural preference is for moist soils, it performs equally well on dry ones, in light shade or full sun. Best of all, this long-lived plant’s acrid, milky sap makes it virtually deer-proof. Because it may also irritate the gardener’s skin, gloves are advisable when planting Blue Star or cutting its flowers for indoor display.
