In May and June, when this Southeastern native bears clusters of pale blue, five-petaled flowers that are the source of its name, you’ll think they are the reason to grow the narrowleaf Bluestar Amsonia hubrichtii. Come fall, though, when the airy foliage turns to a cloud of gold, you’ll be just as sure this is the main attraction. From spring to autumn, the narrow, almost needlelike green leaves and fine texture of Amsonia hubrichtii complement neighbors with bolder foliage. Awarded Perennial Plant of the Year® by the Perennial Plant Association.

You’ll find this graceful wildflower remarkably accommodating. Though its natural preference is for moist soils, it performs equally well on dry ones, in light shade or full sun. Best of all, this long-lived plant’s acrid, milky sap makes it virtually deer-proof. Because it may also irritate the gardener’s skin, gloves are advisable when planting Blue Star or cutting its flowers for indoor display.
