Add color and texture to a shady garden bed with Athyrium niponicum var. pictum ‘Regal Red,’ a handsome variety of Japanese Painted Fern. Deep reddish violet stems and midribs stand out against silvery green, lance-shaped leaflets (pinnae) with slightly twisted subdivisions (pinnules) that give this Fern a ruffled look. Plants are clump-forming, deciduous, and drought-tolerant once established. While ‘Regal Red’ appreciates some sun for best coloration, too much may adversely affect its growth habit. The fronds make lovely additions to cut-flower arrangements.
